Racism and Discrimination
Digilantes is promoting the wearing of paper clips during the 1998 Days of Remembrance (April 19 - 25) to honor victims of the Holocaust and to denounce racism and discrimination.

During World War II, Norwegians wore red hats and vests to show their opposition to Hitler's Nazi regime, but the practice was soon outlawed. The protestors decided to wear paper clips because they were readily available and less obvious. However, Nazi troops uncovered the new code and made wearing paper clips illegal as well.

In 1980 Congress established the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and the annual Days of Remembrance commemoration. Teacher Sharyn Markus of Colorado Springs, who started the paper clip project last year at her middle school, urges individuals nationwide to join the effort by wearing paper clips on their collars during this year's observance.
